Cups are the bottom half of the oyster shell, and the flats are the top of the oyster shell and will mostly lay flat.

If you select mixed shells, you will be getting a mix of both flat oyster shells, and cup oyster shells.

**these are East Coast oyster shells, picked by hand from the shores of the Connecticut seacoast and they are of the thinner kind of oyster shell. They are not as thick as some of the southern oyster shells you see in the southern part of the US.****
